Daniel Huttenlocher is the MIT co-chair of the MIT-IBM Computing Research Lab, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, and the Panasonic Professor in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). His research often bridges between academic subfields and academia and industry. Recently, he has focused on how to develop a better understanding of AI. Over the years he has developed a number of algorithmically-oriented computer vision techniques. The super-pixel segmentation method and Hausdorff distance methods that he helped create remain widely used, even in the modern deep learning era. Huttenlocher earned a BS from the University of Michigan, and an SM and PhD from MIT. He currently serves as the board chair of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and a board member of Corning Inc. and Amazon.com.
